The term "net art" has been used to describe a wide range of internet-based artistic practices, from early experiments with HTML and hypertext to more recent developments in social media and online communities. Net art emerged in the mid-1990s, at a time when the internet was just beginning to gain mainstream popularity. At this time, many artists were drawn to the internet as a new medium for expression, as it offered a level of accessibility and interactivity that had previously been unimaginable.

Net art can take many forms, including websites, blogs, forums, and social media platforms. One of the key characteristics of net art is its ephemeral nature – it is constantly evolving and changing, and often exists only in the digital realm. This has led to some debates about the authenticity and value of net art, as it can be difficult to preserve and exhibit in traditional art contexts.

One of the key pioneers of net art was Jodi, a collaborative duo comprised of Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans. Jodi's work often explored the limits and possibilities of the internet as a medium, using code and programming languages to create interactive, immersive experiences. Another influential figure in the net art world was Cory Arcangel, whose work often consisted of manipulated or hacked images and video from popular culture, commenting on the role of technology in contemporary society.

In recent years, the term "net art" has fallen out of favor in some circles, as it has become increasingly difficult to define and distinguish from other forms of digital art. However, the legacy of net art lives on in the work of contemporary artists who continue to push the boundaries of what is possible online. As the internet continues to evolve and shape our world, the role of net art will likely continue to be a source of debate and exploration.
